Moving to a New State in 2021: 3 Tips to Smooth the Process
By Julie DeLong, A-1 Freeman Moving Group
In reality, it may be a lot to process. Luckily, there are a number of steps you can take in advance to make your move to Colorado Springs less anxious than it may be otherwise.
3 Tips to Ease the Process of a State-to-State Move
Though the task may never be completely stress-free, these three steps might help reduce your tension.
Tip 1: If possible, handle your paperwork in advance.
Moving always requires changing your permanent address. Vital documents, websites, and service providers will all need to be notified. Managing these items ahead of time may allow you to check this item off your schedule and concentrate more completely on your new residence when you get there.
If you move between states, however, you have the extra responsibility of procuring a new driver's license too. As with the change of address regulations, the majority of states have a required amount of time by which you must exchange your old license for a new one, so make sure that you check with your new state's DMV website to fully grasp the time period in which getting a new license will be needed.
Many states mandate an in-person visit to the DMV, others allow you to finish the entire process online. Taking care of this step before yourmove may lessen the transition and free up important settling-in time in your new state of residence—especially during a pandemic, when threats of virus transmission complicate even the easiest matters.
Tip 2: Pack with both short-term and long-term trips in mind.
In one sense, a state-to-state move is like a road trip and a move all grouped into one. Not only are you packing up all your earthly things for transportation, but you're in addition preparing to spend at likely a day or two road-tripping to reach your new location.
Before you get to the very last chores of packing up, always make sure to take time out to pack suitcases for yourself (and, if applicable, for your family members) that will have everything you'll need for the following few days travelling:
- Face masks and hand sanitizer
- Changes of clothes
- Toiletries
- Medications
- ID's and documentation
- Money
Also don't forget about your pets! Be certain they have a few days' worth of supplies packed up in addition.
Tip 3: Select an experienced interstate moving company in Colorado Springs.
All moving companies have specialties. While a few are experts in local moves, others have created systems and structures to support interstate and cross-country moves. When talking to possible moving companies in Colorado Springs, always be certain to ask careful questions regarding their abilities and areas of expertise. Be sure to check out consumer reviews, question friends and contacts and take their knowledge into consideration.
While it's tempting just to choose the cheapest estimate you find after a simple Google search, we have all been around long enough to know that the most affordable offer isn't always the greatest choice after all. If you're facing the anxiety of an interstate move, especially over an ongoing pandemic, you will appreciate knowing you are in good hands the whole time.
